 This week our whole class has been making a time capsule. We have been writing letters to ourselves for the time capsule. It is supposed to be opened in about 50 years time. We wrote about the past year and about Coronavirus, The Olympics for this year, About ourselves and family, Favourite music. It was weird writing the letter because I was writing to myself in 50 years in the future. If you ever made a time capsule what would you write in a letter?

The past few days our class has been making a flax basket for Matariki. First we each got a big piece of flax each and we had to make it into twelve strips. First we had to put seven of the strips down and weave the other five in it. Then we had to make the handle we used the side with seven, you had to fold parts down and eventually you were left with three. I tied them off and then did the same to the other side. Then I went back to the other side and took the middle piece and folded it over to the other side. I took the middle piece from the other side and folded it over like the other one. Then I took the two pieces from the sides and I folded them around the handle and used a small thin strip of flax to tie the ends off. the I gathered all of the flax that was on one side and tied it to look kind of like one side of a boat. Then I did the same with the other side and it was finished. My favourite part about this was pulling the flax into pieces because it felt relaxing. This was important because it was the way that our school showed that we celebrate Matariki

Emily Carr Art

 

This term we did art based on Emily Carr. We did research on her about what she did and when she was born and when she died. Emily Carr was a Famous Canadian Artist that based her art style on trees and sometimes villages and churches. She was born on the 13 of December 1871 and she died on 2 of March 1945 at 73 years old. First for the art we got given a piece of white paper and had to choose two colours I chose blue and pink. Then we had to sketch out a picture of a tree that we were going to paint for the silhouette. When the pieces were put on the back we got to put our initials beside ti on the bottom of the page.

How to Spot Fake News

 

The past few weeks we have been learning about how to spot fake news and we had a look at the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. It is a faux site and we had a look at it and our teacher told us all of the things that you would have to look for to spot fake news then we had to look at some posters and make a poster of our own. My favourite part about learning about this was making the poster. Have you ever heard about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus before?

This term we did art based on the style of Emily Carr First we had to copy a slideshow and answer questions and then we had to do research on what type of art she did. Then we went around the school and took photos of trees to get ideas for our paintings. I am very proud of my painting even though it isn't even finished yet. Have you ever heard of Emily Carr? Do you like Painting? 

Awesome Athletics and Beautiful Beach clean up

Last week on Thursday we did Hapu Sports Athletics and The whole school beach clean up.As part of the sports council I got to help set up all of the Athletics stuff at the Westland High School. The school was split up into age groups there was years 1,2,3,4,5,and 6. I am a year six. We had to do Shot put, Discus, Long jump, High jump, 80 meters, 50 meters, and the 1000 meters I did everything.  I got into the Districts for Shot put , Discus, Long jump, 80 meters and 50 meters. After we had finished the athletics we walked to the beach to do a beach clean up. I was in the enviro group so we did a survey down the other end of the beach and walked from where we were at the rocks to catch up with the rest of the school. By the time we had caught up with everyone they had already finished the beach clean up.  I think we did a good job cleaning up the beach and everybody did really well at athletics.What is the best sport you are good at?

Super Cool Cactus Sports

 This week we did Cactus on Wednesday and Friday, Cactus is like a group and you get to do fun activities and try to push yourself and get out of your comfort zone and try new things.  On Wednesday for Cactus we were only there for half an hour but we still did something fun. The people that run Cactus wanted us to get to know each other so we had to stand in a circle and we had to partner up with the person next to us and ask them what their name was, their favourite colour and their favourite weird food. Then we had to  introduce our partner and it went around like that. On Friday we stood in a circle and passed a ball around and as we passed the ball we had to say the persons name we were throwing the ball to. After that we had to do jump rope it took me a while to eventually jump it. Have you ever done Cactus before?
